Ethnics in Geita

Tanzania has more than 130 tribes. Each ethnic group speaks its own tribal language. Swahili is the national and official language. English is academicals, business and third language. Geita Diocese has four main tribes. The Sukuma, Zinza, Jita, and Kerewe.

Kerewe mainly live along the shore of Lake Victoria and the Island of Kome and Maisome. There are other tribes especially in the urban areas of Geita and Sengerema such as Nyamwezi, Chagga, and Haya who are mainly involved in various trades and commercial enterprises.
